Is big tech the new big tobacco?
What makes us truly happy and healthy in life?
You might think it’s exercise, a healthy diet, career achievements or money.
But in fact, it’s relationships.
In 1938, Harvard researchers embarked on the longest ever running study on happiness. Over the next 85 years, they analysed 724 participants from all over the world, asking detailed questions about their lives at two year intervals.
Interestingly, the most consistent finding was that positive relationships keep us happier, healthier and help us live longer.
🧡 We’re not just talking about romantic relationships here either 🧡
Relationships encompass those that we can depend on in a crisis, those that we can turn to for practical support, the ones that help us learn and grow, the ones we can confide our deepest secrets in, those that make us laugh, the ones we can share experiences with, the relationship with your barista or gym buddy, and the ones that provide us romantic intimacy.
These keystones of support are integral to our relational lives and are best provided from a combination of individuals.
Given the significance relationships play on our lives, it is even more concerning that we are now in the midst of a loneliness epidemic.
The World Health Organisation has declared loneliness as a global health priority.
One in three Australian millennials are reporting loneliness. One in four Gen Z say they always or often feel lonely. Doctors are comparing the physical effects of loneliness to the equivalent of smoking 15x cigarettes a day!
Saddened by soaring rates of loneliness, we felt compelled to do something about it.
We’re on a mission to end loneliness with Humpday
Of course, we want Humpday singles to find romantic relationships.
But we’re maybe even more excited, when they find friends too.
When they thank us for bringing the fun back to being single again.
For helping them feel part of a community.
And for making being single, a lot less lonely.
This is our why. To end loneliness, using technology to empower authentic connection and community.
