5 Best Restaurants in Surry Hills for your next Sydney date night 2024
We can’t get past the classic drinks and dinner combination for a fun date night. In fact, 30% of Humpday users say that going for drinks is their ideal date - keeping it casual!
One of the best parts about being single is getting to have new experiences with new people, and as a bonus, trying out restaurants or bars you haven’t managed to get your mates to.
Or think of it this way, you were going to get a happy hour oyster and martini combo at Jane anyway, so why not have a date join you?
Sydney is full of vibey and delicious establishments for you to enjoy so we’ve rounded up five of our favourite Surry Hills bars and restaurants right now. Even if the company doesn’t work out, you won’t regret trying these spots.
Whet your appetite with this round up:
1. Jane
If you can make it to Australiano hour - you’re in luck. This may be Sydney’s best happy hour with Jane Surry Hills serving up $14 martinis and $2 oysters from 5 - 6pm weeknights. Date going well? Stay for dinner and enjoy the full Australian inspired menu at this hole in the wall venue that is off the beaten path. The pickled mussels and lamb dumplings are enough of a conversation starter. Grab a yellow booth, and get cozy.
2. Kurumba
Family owned and operated, this Sri Lankan eatery is from the team at The Fold in Dulwich Hill and they don’t miss. With a wine list that is surprisingly diverse and delicious, you can share hoppers before going into a main of chicken curry or the Kiewa Valley lamb cutlets. Set inside a terrace, Kurumba is a moody and delicious neighbourhood restaurant and wine bar.
3. Bar Conte
Once you’ve braved the walk up Foveaux Street, you’ll find yourself at this Italian bar and restaurant, with seats that spill out onto the street. Enjoy a negroni from Bar Conte’s 30 strong list, and order a couple of snacks from the bar. If the date goes well, you can always order more food, or keep the drinks going and cross the road to Forresters. Or walk up the street for some pos- negroni Messina. How romantic.
4. Henrietta
Hungry? Forget the bar snacks and head to Henrietta Chicken. Sister restaurant to the finer dining Nour, Henrietta serves up all the Mediterranean you want, in an unpretentious eatery … that doesn’t compromise on deliciousness. It might be more casual, but it makes up for it in vibes – the perfect date night spot.
5. Amuro
A real IYKYK - Amuro is a Japanese restaurant which changes its menu daily, and has forgone a formal drinks menu in lieu of impromptu sake tastings. Let the staff recommend a drink, they really are the experts, and pull from a wall of Japanese sakes and liquors. Sit at the bar and get to know your date over fresh salmon sashimi, karaage chicken or whatever the team is serving up - the handwritten menu changes daily but they never miss. This is as close to Japan as we’re getting to this year, so enjoy.
